Leanplum Documentation

Leanplum's user guides, SDK setup, API docs, and more resources are here to help you get the most out of A/B testing, Campaigns, Messaging, and Analytics.

Personalize an action

Personalized messages perform better than general ones. Including a user's name, for example, can deliver 4x higher open rates than generic content.

With Leanplum, you can:

Strong campaigns combine both of these strategies, serving users the most relevant and specific content.

Personalize message content

Using Leanplum values, you can dynamically populate messages and actions with unique user attributes, behaviors, and parameters. For example, we included our users' first names in this message:

To insert a custom value in your message:

  1. Place your cursor in the field where you want the value to appear, then click the curly brackets {{.
  2. Select "User attribute" from the dropdown menu, then select your user attribute for first names. e.g. "first_name."
  3. Click OK. Notice a placeholder for {{"first_name" value}} appeared — this will be replaced with each user's "first_name" value when the message sends.
  4. Double check for any syntax errors with the error check button, and make sure you preview your message before sending.

You can insert Leanplum values into URLs, Open Actions, or any text field that shows the {{ value selector. Here's an example of a personalized deeplink for a user profile page in your app.

Personalized values in email

For email, the Insert Value tool is under More or Insert in the text editing bar. See more on personalizing Drag and Drop or HTML/WYSIWYG emails with inserted values.

Personalize message versions for different segments (Localization)

Send different versions of a message to different segments of your audience. For example, you could send a push notification in several languages by versioning the push notification for different audience segments.

To version a message:

  1. Build your default message first. Each new version will be a copy of the default at first, so filling in common fields (like colors, images, etc.) before adding segments will save some time.
  2. Click Personalize at the top of the message editor to create a new version for a specific audience segment.
  1. Select the audience you want to receive this version (e.g. Language is French) then click Apply Personalization. Now the Personalize bar will show your new Audience next to the "Default" version.
  2. Edit the new message version's content. You should cater the content to the users in the selected segment.
  3. Select Add and repeat these steps to add additional versions.
To edit or delete one of the segments, select the pen icon next to that segment version.

Users whose language is set to French will receive the "fr" version of our message, and all others will receive the default version.

You provide all the content

Leanplum does not translate text from one language to another for you. You’ll have to translate and edit the text for each version of your segmented message.
